Welcome to the web site for the ex-Cheltenham YHA Group.

In 1951 several young people formed the Cheltenham Social Group of the Youth Hostels Association* They met socially on Thursday evenings at Northlands in Cheltenham, and at weekends visited many Youth Hostels either on foot or on bicycle.
Over the years the name changed to Cheltenham YHA Group; Cheltenham and Gloucester YHA Group.  Eventually the group became the Gloucestershire Outdoor Group.
This web site is about the activities of some of the members that were in the group in the late 1960s and 1970s and have met up again in recent years*** to rekindle old friendships and relive some of their experiences.  We hope you like it and will visit again.

Some of the Youth Hostels that we visited ...
* See the extract from a 1961 edition of the group's magazine (via 'Magazine' tab at top of page) for an article on the formation of the group.
** The choice of the name 'Bummel' for the group magazine is thought to have been inspired by the title of the Jerome K. Jerome book 'Three Men on the Bummel' (not perhaps as well known as 'Three Men in a Boat') about three men who go on a cycling tour in the Black Forest in Germany. In the early days the group probably did more cycle touring than walking, so 'Bummel' seems very appropriate!

The Bummel**

is the name given to the regular magazine
of the Cheltenham YHA Group.

   From a German-English dictionary:

      Bummel nm. stroll
Bummelei nf. stroll, loafing, negligence, indolence
Bummler nm., Bummerlin nf. dawdler, loafer

This succinctly describes us and our activities!
